
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. Latifah is the second child of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her social politics and acting abilities as well as her knack for rhyme. When she was eight years older, a Muslim friend gave her the nickname Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing with the choir at Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and made her debut public appearance when she performed a rendition of "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school.
