Madekwe is the daughter of a mixed-race family from South London in England. Her father is Nigerian as well as Swiss as well as the mother of her is English. Madekwe was a part of Ashley Davenport for the ABC show The Beautiful Life. The two-episode show aired only for two weeks on The CW and then it came to an end. Ashley Davenport, a character on ABC's Revenge drama, was chosen for her as Ashley Davenport. Madekwe was a regular in the drama series on ABC Revenge for two seasons. Ashley Leggat grew up in Hamilton Ontario and was a part of a large family. Four of her older brothers were present as well and included twins Todd & Bram, Brett & Rob. Ashley's brothers were athletic and played baseball in summer and hockey in the winter. Ashley could never walk, however she did dance. As she was two and a half, she began Baby Ballet and fell in love. Ashley was hooked on dance from that moment. Ashley competed in tap, jazz and ballet in the high divisions. She won the top soloist awards at all of the most prestigious dance competitions like, International Dance Challenge, Showstoppers, 5-6-7-8 Showtime, Flash Dance, and Dance, Dance, Dance to name a few.

Firefly was Whedon's upcoming success and it's safe to say that she had an impact. The Summer Glau River Tam character was complex and Glau dealt with it well. In the role of Tam her character, she was enticed into government-sponsored experiments in which she was being trained to be the ultimate assassin. Tam lost her ability to control her emotions as a result. Glau got the chance to show off not only her acting talents, but her fighting skills on Firefly. It was also evident that learning to be an assassin enabled Glau to fully use her athletic abilities. Summer Glau, a trained classical ballerina.
